Run Report

The Mercedes-Benz GLE replaced the ML-Class in 2016 and has since become one of the most depreciation-sensitive mid-size luxury SUVs on the used market. A three-year-old GLE can lose 40-45% of its original sticker, which makes it look like a deal until you factor in what it costs to maintain one that was deferred. The hook: the W167 generation (2020+) added the 48-volt EQ Boost mild hybrid system and optional E-Active Body Control air suspension, both of which are impressive at purchase and expensive to repair at 70,000 miles. Knowing which GLE you are looking at, and which suspension it carries, is the first question to answer.

What to Look For in Photos

Paint and Body

The GLE's long rear quarter panels and large door skins attract parking lot contact. The AMG Line body kit, which ships on most US-spec GLE 350 and GLE 450 examples, includes painted lower sill extensions that sit below the rocker panels and make contact with raised parking stops. Consistent light scuffing along the sills is cosmetic and expected; deep gouges can hide damage to the rocker panel beneath and are worth flagging. On W167 models (2020+), the front bumper has narrow air curtain openings at the lower corners that crack on debris impact. Replacement runs $1,200-1,800 painted. Designo tri-coat colors (Mojave Silver, Selenite Grey, certain reds) are prohibitively difficult to match after repair.

Tires

The GLE 350 4MATIC runs 265/50R19 front and rear on most trims. The GLE 450 and GLE 53 AMG step up to staggered 265/45R20 front and 295/40R20 rear. That staggered AMG setup cannot be rotated; rear 295-section tires cost $300-400 each on quality fitment. The GLE is a heavy vehicle. 4,800-5,300 lbs depending on spec. And tire wear reflects that. A used GLE above 40,000 miles on 20-inch staggered AMG wheels has likely deferred a $1,200-1,600 tire replacement. Look at the inner edges of rear tires in three-quarter rear photos. Feathering there signals alignment or suspension issues.

Interior

The GLE interior holds up well at mileage. The ARTICO artificial leather standard on GLE 350 models resists cracking better than the Nappa leather on GLE 450 trims. The most common failure point is the panoramic sunroof drainage system: on W167 examples, the sunroof seal degrades and water pools in the drain channels, eventually tracking into the headliner. Look for any staining along the headliner at the sunroof leading edge or at the A-pillar upper trim. Second-row captain's chair cushions on five-seat GLE 350 models compress unevenly when one side is used more. Visible in rear seat photos as a height difference between the two cushions. The MBUX infotainment displays on 2020+ models are bright and show dead pixels clearly if the listing photo captures the screen on.

What Dr. Vin Checks on a GLE

Dr. Vin evaluates the GLE's AMG Line sill extensions for contact damage and assesses whether impact has reached the rocker panels beneath. Headliner photos are checked for sunroof water intrusion staining. Rear tire inner edges are flagged when feathering is visible, and the AI notes staggered AMG fitments as a cost transparency item given replacement pricing.

How It Compares

The BMW X5 is the direct competitor at every price point. The X5 has a stronger driver's chassis and its air suspension (on xLine and M Sport trims) has a longer reliability track record than the GLE's E-Active Body Control. The GLE counters with more lateral interior space and a quieter highway ride on standard suspension. The Audi Q7 is the value argument: true three-row seating, proven air suspension at high mileage, and Quattro AWD that has demonstrated durability past 100,000 miles. The Lexus RX sits below the GLE in price but above it in long-term reliability data. The GLE's complexity is its appeal and its risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most expensive thing that goes wrong on a used GLE?

The E-Active Body Control hydraulic suspension on W167 models costs $3,000-5,000 per axle when the hydraulic system develops leaks, typically between 70,000-100,000 miles. Standard air suspension failure runs $1,500-2,500 per corner. Any used GLE with active suspension above 70,000 miles should have these repair costs factored into the offer price. The GLE 350 with conventional (non-air) suspension is the lower-risk choice for buyers who are not prepared to absorb this expense.

How does the GLE hold up above 80,000 miles?

The GLE 350 with standard suspension and a documented service history is a reasonable buy through 70,000-80,000 miles. Above that, the risk of multiple system failures compounding accelerates. Air suspension-equipped examples become financially unpredictable above 60,000 miles without prior ownership history. The weak points are suspension, MBUX electronics, and sunroof sealing. Not the engine or transmission, both of which are genuinely durable when maintained on Mercedes' service schedule.

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it on a used GLE?

Yes, and more so than on most vehicles in this segment. The GLE's suspension variants are difficult to identify from photos alone, and a PPI by a Mercedes-specialist independent shop (not a dealer) can confirm whether the active suspension shows early hydraulic leak signs, whether the sunroof drainage channels are clear, and whether the 48V mild hybrid BSG unit is functioning. The PPI costs $150-250 and can identify $3,000-8,000 in deferred issues. On a vehicle this complex, skip it only if the price already accounts for the risk.
