What Dr. Vin is not
Dr. Vin is the pre-filter that decides which cars are worth the Carfax lookup, the test drive, and the mechanic's time. It is not a substitute for any of them.
- Not a VIN history report. Dr. Vin reads the car from the photos. Use Carfax or AutoCheck for title status, odometer records, and accident history tied to the VIN. Always run one on any listing you pursue.
- Not a mechanical inspection. A $150 pre-purchase inspection from a certified mechanic finds what photos cannot: engine wear, transmission slippage, subframe rust, hidden leaks. Dr. Vin tells you which cars deserve that $150; it does not replace it.
- Not a guarantee. Every assessment is probabilistic and bounded by what the photos reveal. Sellers can omit angles, edit lighting, and hide damage. Dr. Vin flags missing photo angles and known indicators of manipulation, but it cannot penalize an anomaly it cannot perceive. Always verify in person.
